Essex County Council Highways Department as a graduate engineer under training.

At Essex Susan worked in highway design, traffic, road safety, bridge design, and road maintenance sections before spending 18 months on site in the Resident Engineer's staff supervising construction of a major trunk road improvement.

In 1985 Susan joined Husband and Company who were subsequently merged with the Mott MacDonald Group. She worked on the preliminary and detailed design of several major urban and rural trunk road schemes using the MOSS suite of computer programs. Her responsibilities covered all stages of the projects from route selection through public inquiry to construction; including liaison with the clients, statutory undertakers and other engineering disciplines. Susan progressed to the level of deputy group engineer before taking maternity leave in 1991.

In 1993 Susan carried out short term assignments for Ellis Design Associates, prepared contract documents for a major motorway maintenance scheme for Surrey County Council, and designed the roads for a university residential development for Kenchington Ford. She then traveled with her family to Hong Kong for 1994 and 1995.

For one year from summer 2001 Susan worked as a commission manager for Halcrow Transportation Infrastructure at Chichester, responsible for W.S.C.C. minor works design, contract preparation, C3 tender, and client liaison. The deigns were prepared using MX and AutoCAD.
